Genjutsu (illusion techniques)
Genjutsu
(Illusion Techniques) are techniques that use the chakra in the
victim's nervous system to create illusions; an advanced intellectual
Ninjutsu. The most commonly seen Genjutsu is simple creation of
phantasms- causing the targeted person to hear, see, smell, taste and
feel things that are not actually there in order to manipulate them;
other applications of Genjutsu are rare.

There are several ways
to counter Genjutsu. Because it uses the victim's own chakra against
him, he can cancel the genjutsu by trying to stop, and thereby disrupt,
his own chakra flow. This is called Genjutsu Kai (Illusion Technique
Cancel). If this doesn't work, then the only way for the victim to
cancel the Genjutsu is having someone else disrupt his chakra flow with
theirs through body contact. It has also been seen that if a person
caused themself a "shocking" pain (such as a stab wound or broken
finger) that they will wake up as well. It should be noted, however,
that in the case of some high-level Genjutsu techniques that even pain
will not break the Jutsu.

Kasumi jusha no jutsu (Mist servant technique)

The
user creates a large variety of clones that phase in and out of the
ground as if they were made of blackish liquid (oil?). The user can
then hide the projectiles they throw within the illusory ones that
clones throw.

Narakumi
no Jutsu is a Genjutsu technique that causes its target to see a
horrifying vision. The ninja will use the rat hand seal to cause a
circle of leaves to spin and envelop the target and then fall away.
Once cast the world will appear normal to the target until they see the
illusion.

Kori shinchu no jutsu (Sly mind affect technique)
Name: Kori Shinchu no Jutsu, literally "Sly Mind Affect Technique"

Kori
Shinchu no Jutsu is a Genjutsu which causes the target to travel around
in circles. If the ninja is unable to detect the illusion very quickly,
they can become exhausted mentally and physically because they are
unable to reach their desired target by traveling along the same path
over and over.

Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu (Demonic illusion: False surroundings technique)

Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu is a simple Genjutsu which changes the appearance of a nearby object.

Magen: Jubaku satsu (Demonic illusion: Tree bind death)

With
this jutsu Kurenai can make herself disappear so she can approach her
target unnoticed. Once near her target, a tree will grow at their feet
and its branches will bind him so they are unable to move. Once the
target believes they are captured, Kurenai will appear from the tree
and stab the target with a kunai.

Using
her flute, Tayuya creates the illusion that her opponent is in a
never-ending room of bones. They are bound by wires that hang from the
ceiling, restricting their movement. Soon after, their flesh will begin
to melt away from their bones, causing great pain and horror to the
target.

This
technique is like the Shadow Imitation Technique, but Shikamaru makes
the enemy fall through the shadow to teleport them to an unknown place,
and in seconds, the enemy returns confused and faints.

Nehan
Shōja no Jutsu is a Genjutsu that allows the caster to place a large
body of people into a unconscious state. The target can avoid the spell
by forming and using the dispel skill.

This
genjutsu requires the Sharingan and eye contact to be activated. The
illusion traps the victim in a dark empty space where their body is
made of paper that burns from toe to head while the user is watching.
The purpose of this jutsu is to use the target's vision of their new
form to reduce his/her dexterity, making it harder for the victim to
battle or perform hand seals.

This
jutsu causes the illusion of a tremendous ball of fire falling from the

Ino
creates an illusion in which countless butterflies surround the enemy.
The enemy sinks into the ground, giving Ino the chance to place an
exploding tag on their face before cutting off the illusion, revealing
that all the butterflies were exploding tags that all detonate
alongside the original.

This
jutsu places another illusion on top of a previous illusion created by
the user. If and when the target dispels the first illusion, they will
not realize that a second is in place.

This
sound-based Genjutsu is used by Shima and Fukasaku. It is extremely
powerful, and is said to be the most powerful Genjutsu in Shima and
Fukasaku's arsenal. Since it is Sound-Based, it can capture multiple
opponents at the same time. After Shima and Fukasaku synchronize
melodies, those opponents that hear it are left completely paralyzed.
Once trapped, the opponents are trapped in an illusionary cube of water
that is guarded by four toad samurai. The opponents' bodies are left
unable to move and can freely be attacked by the users or their allies.
Despite its great power, it takes some time for Shima and Fukasaku to
synchronize melodies, and since it uses sound, it gives away their
location, allowing opponents to attack them while it is prepared. It
also appears to use a large amount of chakra, and it makes Shima and
Fukasaku's throats dry.

The
jutsu prevents the Sharingan user's mind from being taken over by an
opponent. The opponent is pierced and immobilized by illusionary yokes,
making it an effective means for torture and interrogation. It has only
been seen used in response to Orochimaru's Living Corpse Reincarnation.

After using Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind Death, the tree that trapped the opponent explodes.

Using the Sharingan's jutsu-copying abilities, the user can turn any genjutsu back onto its original user.

Unlike
his other genjutsu, Itachi does not need to make eye contact with the
target to use this technique, instead activating it by simply pointing
at them. Crows flock from Itachi and turn into shuriken that bombard
the opponent. They then experience the sensation of their body parts
turning into their closest friends.

The user will cast an illusion which surrounds the target in flower petals and darken the surroundings around them.

As
the name suggests, the user binds the opponent in a genjutsu, rendering
them incapable of movement. As Tsunade demonstrates when facing the
Legendary Stupid Brothers, this genjutsu can be used on more than one
target at the same time. Once the target is bound, the user or an ally
can rush up to the enemy, able to easily deliver a devastating killing
blow.

When
trapped inside of a genjutsu or wishing to appear trapped, Kurenai uses
this jutsu to dissolve her body into many flower petals which then
consume her enemy's body.

Kurenai
uses her Demonic Illusion: Tree Bind Death to attach the enemy to a
tree then Asuma finish with a slash of his Flying Swallow.

* Name: Illusion Bell Needles (スズ千本の幻覚, Suzu Senbon no Genkaku)

By
attaching the bells to senbon (throwing needles) and throwing them at
her target, Kin can get them to dodge and subsequently ignore the
bells. Additionally, the target may believe the bells are actually
designed to lull them into a false sense of security. In actuality, she
has strings attached to the bells, which allows her to ring them. In
the anime, the bells ring at a certain frequency, which directly
affects the brain. This causes her target to see multiple copies of
herself, making it impossible to tell the real one from the illusions.
Additionally, the target loses their motor skills with continued
exposure to the ringing.

Kurenai creates an illusionary clone that charges towards the enemy, jumps, then explodes in a cloud of cherry blossom petals.

Kakko
uses this genjutsu to break the will of his (captured) target, to make
him or her give as much as possible information. Either way, if the
target has strong will (like Rin) the technique will be useless.

With
this unnamed Genjutsu, Kamina causes the area around the target to be
enveloped by darkness. Once inside the black space, the target will see
grotesque figures (which are thought to be the previous victims of the
technique). These figures then grab the target and pull them into the
void where they are at the mercy of a spectral dragon. The horrifying
oni can even extend from the target's own body to attack them. All of
these creature can transfix the victim with fear and shock while Kamina
will personally choke and kill the target.

Ino
casts an illusion that tricks the enemy, causing them to see a storm of
flowers. This jutsu has different variations ranging from a field of
flowing petals to an overflow of petals surrounding the enemy. Once Ino
has spotted the enemy with a clear shot, she throws a Wolf Bane, a
flower filled with poison in the stem, and gets the enemy in the head,
resulting to a very slow but painful death.

Kurenai
uses a Genjutsu wherein she disappears and a tree grows around the
opponent, binding them. Kurenai then comes out of the tree and strikes
the opponents neck, causing the tree to explode and the opponent to
faint.

Fuen
first uses some kind of poison that is thin and tiny enough to be taken
in the air. Her target will inhale the poison and start to see the
things Fuen wants, like caves, moths, or allies of the target trying to
kill the target. When her target is imprisoned in her genjutsu, Fuen
charges and kills her target. Sakura Haruno was able to create an
antidote for the technique, allowing her to defeat Fuen.

This
is a powerful genjutsu known to be forbidden among the Konohagakure
ninja. It is a genjutsu that targets the mind and causes the target to
see friends as foes. It is shown to even affect those with powerful
bonds, such as Naruto and Sasuke, which is why this is known as a
forbidden technique.

This
technique puts the target in a state of reverse hypnosis, allowing them
to remember details that they otherwise would not. The target will
comply with interrogation, but seems to retain his or her personality
while under hypnosis. For example, when the ANBU used this technique to
bring back Naruto's memories about his conversations with Gennō, Naruto
was more specific about the ramen he shared with the old man rather
than their conversations, which the ANBU were asking about.

Itachi
uses his Mangekyo Sharingan on the opponent to trap them inside the
Tsukuyomi, then comes walking up behind the opponent and stabs them in
the back. Left open to attack, Kisame comes up from the water below to
finish the foe with a slash from his Samehada.

Tsukuyomi (Moon Reader)
Name: Tsukuyomi, literally "Moon Reader"
Type: Kekkei Genkai, No rank, Supplementary, Short range (0-5m)
Users: Uchiha Itachi
Named
after the Shinto god of the moon, this Genjutsu is one of the most
powerful Uchiha jutsu enabled by the Mangekyō Sharingan. The Mangekyō
user places the victim in an illusory world where all aspects,
including the perception of time, are controlled by the user.
Uchiha
Itachi uses this ability to inflict several days' worth of torment on
his victims in an instant, which tends to leave the victim bedridden.
However, Tsukuyomi is an enormous drain on the user, which discourages
its frequent use. Itachi is seemingly only able to use it for the
equivalent of three days maximum

This
technique is a variation of the Tsukuyomi. The user transforms the
Tsukuyomi into a barrier that slows the opponent down. This does not
happen physically but rather makes the opponent think they are being
held back by a barrier.

Tsukuyomi: Black Dream

Itachi
traps the enemy in a Tsukuyomi illusion, causing them to see the ground
beneath their feet break open, plummeting them into a huge chasm. The
torment ends (and apparently their life) when a column of fire slams
them into the pit.

Itachi
creates a water clone to punch and hold the enemy. Kisame slashes them
into the air while using the remains of the destroyed water clone to
summon a water shark to strike the enemy. The opponent falls in the
wake of Itachi's Tsukuyomi in which the enemy withers away as though
they were water.
